New Delhi: A study group constituted to explore the feasibility of extending the service life of Indian Navy Ship Viraat has recommended that an extension up to 2012 is possible, subject to certain repairs being undertaken in addition to routine periodic maintenance. This information was given by the defence minister AK Antony in a written reply to Jyotiraditya M Scindia in the Lok Sabha.

The minister also mentioned that the induction, replacement and augmentation of ships in the naval fleet is a continuous process, based on threat perception and the international security environment. He said that it would not be in the interest of national security to divulge the details of the replacement and augmentation of the naval fleet.
