Islamabad: Pakistan's national carrier, Pakistan International Airlines, may find most of its fleet declared off-limits in the European Union (EU) from March 8 with the Union now determined to enforce a ban on the carrier. The ban will come into effect as the carrier has failed to heed persistent reminders from the EU to improve its safety record.

In this regard, the German ambassador to Pakistan, Gunter Mulack, said that Pakistan had been informed of the decision about a year ago. "Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) was asked time and again to improve safety standards by inducting modern aircraft in its fleet," he was quoted by the Press Trust of India (PTI), as saying in Peshawar.

The action follows a recent decision by Germany, which holds the presidency of the EU, to refuse landing permission to a Frankfurt-bound Airbus flight from Islamabad because of concerns over safety standards. According to Mulack, because of the ban, PIA's Boeing 777's would be the only aircraft able to operate in European countries.

Mulack also said that the EU's decision on the ban was final because most of PIA planes did not meet the required safety standards.

According to the report, a meeting of the EU authorities, to be held March 5 or 7 will take a formal decision on the matter.
