New Delhi: GMR Infrastructure Ltd has announced that its subsidiary, the Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), has been awarded the prestigious ISO 9001:2000 quality certificate for the international cargo terminal of the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport. The award comes a mere seven months after GMR Infrastructure's taking charge of the IGI airport.

GMR said that the certificate, awarded by the Lloyds Register, is recognition of the efforts put in by DIAL to improve customer service, quality control and efficiency.

DIAL's air cargo terminal, spread over 27 acres of land, manages and operates a common user infrastructure facility for storage and processing of international air cargo. The terminals' semi-mechanized integrated facilities also enable secured and efficient export, import and trans-shipment cargo functions.

A single window clearance for import and export of international cargo, all under one roof, facilitate expeditious processing and custom clearance. This is especially significant as air cargo traffic is growing rapidly. DIAL currently handles more than 0.4 million tonnes of cargo per annum, which figure is expected to grow to 1.27 million tonnes by 2020, and 2.0 million tonnes by 2025.

GMR says that a master plan, aimed at modernizing the Delhi airport has been submitted to the ministry of civil aviation and the Airports Authority of India recently. The plan envisions the construction of a new integrated passenger terminal to cater to the both domestic and international traffic by 2010, with a new cargo complex to follow subsequently.

The foundation stone for the new integrated terminal, as well as a third runway, was laid recently by Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance, the ruling coalition at the centre.
