Kochi: The Kerala state-owned Steel Industrials Kerala (SILK) has commissioned the 3x650-kw Thirumurthy Hydel Project at Udumalpet, Tamil Nadu, according to SILK managing director T C Khalid. "The Rs 9-crore project, after successful completion and trial runs, has been handed over to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) last week."

Khalid said the Thirumurthy project is a very prestigious work, as SILK had bagged the contract against stiff competition, and all the major equipment involved in the project were designed and manufactured by SILK units. "We are also executing another major project — 2x2000 kw at Amaravathy near Pollachi — for the TNEB. For hydroelectric projects, the company has entered into a technical collaboration with Koessler Ges MBH, Austria, and CMEC International Engg Co, Beijing, China."

Apart from hydroelectric projects, the company is engaged in the erection and commissioning of projects in the fields of chemicals, shipbuilding, water treatment, fabrication, civil construction and low-cost housing. Presently, for Kerala Minerals and Metals at Chavara, a 25-tonne per-day capacity mineral separation plant is under execution. A new area SILK has ventured into is ‘rubber dams,’ says Khalid. "Designing of rubber dams, a cost-effective technology for building check-dams across rivers, is in progress at SILK now."
