Mumbai: The 30-share Sensitive Index, or Sensex, of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) crossed the psychological 4000-level, and, more importantly, stayed put to raise hope of another surge.

The Sensex closed the day at 4006.91, a gain of 29.18 points over its previous close. It had hit the day's high of 4026.27 in early trade.

That is a rise of 41 per cent from its 52-week low of 2828.48 touched on 28 October 2002.

The broader S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) closed at 1277.70 or 3.70 points lower than its previous close.
