Popular Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is planning a plant in Chennai to start manufacturing some of its products in India soon.

Reports say Xiaomi has partnered with Taiwanese company Inventec for this venture. The latter already makes devices for Xiaomi.

Inventec may kick off production at a leased facility in Chennai as soon as the end of June or in early July.

No details have been given about the Xiaomi devices which will be made in India, though it is most likely to be in smartphones, which is what the firm is known for.

The plant in Chennai is expected to fulfil Xiaomi's production demand for the next year or two, says one report.

Outside of its own borders, India is the hugest market for the Chinese company. It has released four handsets in the country so far, covering the Mi 4, Redmi Note Mi 3, and Redmi 1S.

Xiaomi's smartphones are priced aggressively – tech watchers say they are cheap in comparison with the features they offer. And with a plant in India, they may get cheaper still, posing a serious threat to market leaders like Max and Samsung.
