The union cabinet has approved the setting up of six institutes on the model of the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) Mohali, Punjab, taking the total number of such institutes in the country to seven.

The new NIPERs, would follow the public-private partnership model and are expected to cost approximately Rs330 crore each, including the PPP element.

In addition, about 100 acres of land are required for the project, which is to be provided by the concerned state governments free of cost. Each of these NIPERs would take about 4-5 years time to be fully established.

Based on the detailed project report submitted by the consultant, proposals would be submitted to expenditure finance committee/CCEA for consideration/approval.

The government has accepted the report submitted by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Pvt Ltd, the consultants appointed for preparing a detailed project report for each new NIPER, incorporating the element of public private partnership (PPP) model wherever possible and suggesting the areas of specialisation.

The new NIPERs are being set up at Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh), Hajipur (Bihar), Kolkata (West Bengal), Rae Bareli (UP) and Guwahati (Assam).
