Mumbai: J K Cement Ltd has signed a machinery and equipment supply contract worth Rs150 crore with Denmark's with FL Smidth & Co AS for its 3-million tonne greenfield cement plant at Karnataka.

The Rs900-crore plant, with a 30-lakh tonne per annum capacity, is expected to go on stream in the second half of 2008. The company says it has completed 80 per cent of the land acquisition for the project at Mudhol in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka for the project.

The cement produced at the new plant will cater to the markets of Maharashtra, Karnataka and some pockets of Andhra Pradesh.

The other equipment suppliers for the plant are Switzerland-based MAAG for gearboxes, BHEL for motors and L&T for crushers and other equipment.

J K Cement had recently bought over group company Jaykaycem Ltd for the Karnataka plant, which has mining limestone rights. The company says the mining rights are for proven reserves of 82-million tonnes, equivalent to 30 years production requirement.
