Former telecom minister A RajaThe Central Bureau of Investigation today sought to widen the charges against former telecom minister A Raja and other accused, including two of his former aides.

In a fresh chargesheet, it invoked stronger provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which could entail life imprisonment, or 10 years' imprisonment with a fine.

The current charges under Section 311 of the IPC could have led to a maximum imprisonment of seven years.

Special Public Prosecutor U U Lalit filed an application before the special CBI court saying a case of criminal breach of trust under Section 409 is "certainly made out" against Raja, his former private secretary R K Chandolia and former telecom secretary Siddharth Behura.

The fresh affidavit said besides Raja and the two former officials, others accused, including Kanimozhi, daughter of DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, and three telecom firms should be charged under section 409 read with 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.

All the accused are currently lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail under judicial custody.
