Researchers at Swiss firm Lubera had created the world's first 'sparkling' apple that fizzes in the mouth, like soda or any other carbonated drink, when eaten.

The report said when an apple was bitten into, the cells in the flesh of the fruit released tongue-tingling juices akin to having a mouthful of a fizzy drink.

According to experts, one of the two varieties used to breed the new apple was called Resi, which was an East German specimen known for its sweet texture.

In its bid to create a new apple called Paradis Sparkling, Swiss firm Lubera mixed Resi with the Pirouette variety and after years of trials and genetic modification, the new breed attained perfection.

According to Robert Maierhofer, production manager at Lubera, for an apple fit for eating, he thought it was the best apple the company ever had.

He added, it was different to any other on the market and the texture was something that people had never eaten before. It had a soft texture but a heavy crunch and very big cells that opened up in the mouth, releasing a lot of acidity and sugar that gave one a feeling of having a fizzy drink.
