Kellogg Co., the worlds leading breakfast cereal maker, yesterday voluntarily recalled 28 million boxes of cereal in the US because of an unusual flavour and smell emanating from the boxes that could cause nausea and diarrhoea.

Battle Creek, Michigan-based Kelloggs said that working in consultation with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it is implementing a voluntary recall of certain breakfast cereals due to an uncharacteristic off-flavour and smell coming from the liner in the package.

The recall covers Kellogg's Apple Jacks, Kellogg's Corn Pops, Kellogg's Froot Loops and Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereals.

While the potential for serious health problems is low, some consumers are sensitive to the uncharacteristic off-flavour and smell and should not eat the recalled products because of possible temporary symptoms, including nausea and diarrhoea, said Kellogg's in a statement.

The company warned consumers not to eat the recalled products because they do not meet its quality standards.  Few consumers have experienced temporary symptoms, including nausea and diarrhoea after eating the cereals.

The recalled cereals were made at an Omaha, Nebraska plant and about 20 consumers had complained, of which five had reported to have suffered from nausea and vomiting.
