Mangalore: With an estimated 80,000-odd villages in India still deprived of electricity from the grid there is a need to harness solar energy to provide electricity in far-flung rural areas, says Syndicate Bank executive director M S Kapoor.

Syndicate Bank - which, among other aspects, is into the business of popularising solar home systems - has disbursed loans worth over Rs 7 crore towards more than 3,000 solar water-heating systems over the past two years.

Speaking after inaugurating a trainers training programme for bankers and representatives of other lending institutions, Kapoor called upon banks and financial institutions to work towards popularising solar home systems.

The programme, organised by Syndicate Bank in association with Bharatiya Vikas Trust, Winrock International USA and Winrock International India, was sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development in New Delhi.
