Libya would hold elections in eight months and deposed president Muammar Gaddafi would face trial in the country, according to opposition leader Mustafa Abdul Jalil.

Abdul Jalil chairman of the rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) pledged that in eight month the rebels would hold legislative and presidential elections.

He added the rebels wanted a democratic government and a just constitution.

He added above all Libya did not wish to continue to be  isolated in the world as they had been up to now, he added in comments published in the Italian La Repubblica daily.

Meanwhile, the whereabouts of colonel Gaddafi remained unknown yesterday as rebels took control of his Tripoli compound.

According to the rebel leader, most within the NTC believed colonel Gaddafi and his cohorts should eventually be judged ''in a fair trial, but it must take place in Libya''.
