In a strongly worded condemnation of Syria's ''outrageous use of violence" against anti-government protesters, the White House said the Syrian government was leading Syria down a "dangerous path" and called for "an immediate end to the brutality and violence".

According to activists, at least 32 people were killed in fresh clashes yesterday.

The violence came as government forces entered the town of Jisr al-Shughour, which had earlier seen 120 security personnel killed.

In a bid to escape the violence, hundreds of civilians have fled to Turkey.

Meanwhile, White House spokesman Jay Carney has repeated calls for the Syrian security forces to exercise restraint.

The government, has blamed  "armed groups" for the deaths of 120 security personnel but according to some,  the troops were shot after a mutiny.
