Washington: US Treasury Department figures reveal that China may have made the largest percentage cut in its US Treasury holdings in nine years reducing its size in the month of June by $25.1 billion or 3.1 per cent.

China is the largest US creditor and as of June holds $776.4 billion in US Treasury bonds, compared to $801.5 billion in May.

According to the China Daily, the June holdings were still larger than April's $763.5 billion and $767.9 billion in March.

Though China may have shed some weight, the demand for US Treasuries picked up in June with Japan, the second largest holder of US Treasuries, increasing its holdings to $711.8 billion. This was up $34.6 billion from May.

Britain, the third largest holder, held $214 billion in June, up $50.2 billion from May.
