Micron Technology, Inc, is embarking on a second round of expansion in the United States, with planned investment of $200 billion in the development and manufacture of advanced memory chips.

Announcing this on Thursday, the US Department of Commerce said the investment will support the Trump Administration’s push to restore America’s technology leadership in semiconductor manufacturing and R&D while also rewarding American industry and its workforce.

Micron, a US-based manufacturer of computer memory chips, currently operates production facilities in Idaho and New York. The company plans to build a second chip fabrication facility in Boise, Idaho. Besides, it will expand and modernise its fabrication facility in Manassas, Virginia, utilising critical technology employed in its Taiwan facility.

The Dynamic Random Axes Memory (DRAM) technology-based advanced memory chips power everything from cell phones to high-performance computing, artificial intelligence and next generation automotive technologies. Ironically, US has lost the advantage of high-performance semiconductor chip technology to countries like China and Taiwan, who currently account for almost all DRAM chips production.

A Commece Department said Micron’s investment will bring advanced High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) packaging capabilities and and the necessary R&D to boost American manufacturing and improve semiconductor supply chain.

The Commerce Department has already provided $6.165 billion in direct funding to Mocron for setting up three chip fabrication units in Idaho and New York. The latest investment will add $275 million of additional government funding under the Chips Act.

Futher, these investments will create 90,000 additional jobs across projects in Idaho, New York and Virginia.

Micron’s planned investment in the US will support critical investments like AI, automotive, and aerospace & defence, the Commerce Department added.
