The government has imposed anti-dumping duty on cheap imports of a certain types of fibre boards, mainly from countries like China and Thailand, in order to protect the domestic industry.

The directorate general of anti-dumping duties imposed anti-dumping duty ranging between $308.7 per cubic metre and $395.5 per cubic metre on plain medium density fibre board, which is widely used for partitions, furnitures and cabinets, the finance ministry said in a notification.

A release issued by the DGAD said it carried out an anti-dumping probe and recommended the duty on an application of domestic producers alleging dumping of the board from China, Thailand, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.

The DGAD said investigations have established that the dumping of plain medium density fibre board from these countries had caused material injury to domestic industry.

Anti-dumping duty varies from product to product and country to country - the duty is allowed under WTO's multilateral trade rules.

The government has so far slapped anti-dumping duty on several items such as yarn, fabrics, some of the stainless steel products and chemicals imported from China and other countries.
