India hikes duty-free quota for Bangla textiles

India today raised the quota of duty-free apparel exports for Bangladesh and lifted the countervailing duties on all jute imported from that country as the two neighbours agreed to take further steps to promote trade and economic cooperation.
India has offered to increase the tariff-free quota for apparel exports from Bangladesh by 10 million pieces, an increase of 25 per cent over the previous years.
India also announced the lifting of countervailing duties on all jute exports from Bangladesh.
The two countries also agreed to strengthen infrastructure at borders, including construction of land custom stations and integrated check posts, particularly at Petrapole and Agartala to facilitate trade.
A working group on infrastructure will coordinate implementation of the projects.
India would step up the schedule for completion of border haats in Meghalaya for a formal launch in June 2011.
