US retail giant Walmart in association with the Delhi government has opened a training centre to provide skilled workers for organised retail and cash-and-carry stores.

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit inaugurated the training centre yesterday, which will impart vocational training that will be retail sector-focused. The training will be imparted free-of-cost.

Centrum Learning Systems in consultation with Wal-Mart has developed he training curriculum.

"We not only do the direct farming, we also do the private labels. Almost 18 percent of the goods in India are on the private labels, which we buy from small manufacturers. So this partnership, which is the first of its kind with the Delhi government, we are very hopeful will expand as we have done with other governments," said Rajan Bharti Mittal, vice chairman and MD, Bharti Enterprises.

"We have gone to Punjab and this initiative will create some kind of a differentiation, and I am hoping not only Bharti Walmart, but other companies emulate this to create more employment opportunities," he added.

The company will also try to ensure that candidates who successfully complete the course are suitably placed with organisations in the field. The training centre has already enrolled 112 students of the batch of 125 which it is expected to train each month.
