Kochi: Voltas Limited, India’s premier air-conditioning and refrigeration company, has introduced in the Kerala market a new brand of air-conditioners, Vertis, which, the company claims, offers American quality at Chinese prices.

Vertis, the 21st century’s first international range of state-of-the-art air-conditioners, is the product of Universal Comfort Products, Voltas’ joint venture with the US-based Fedders International.

Launching the new product in Kochi, Voltas managing director Ashok Soni said the Vertis range is a reflection of Voltas’ commitment to provide its customers with latest-technology products at affordable prices. "With the launch of Vertis, the company, having a turnover of Rs 1,000 crore, plans to strengthen its image and trust with retail and household customers."

R S N Raju, regional vice-president of Voltas’ cooling appliances business division, earlier told a news conference that the new product is the first step in its bid to regain a leadership position in the air-conditioners segment. "Vertis is not only of international standards but also compares well with the finest and the latest technology in the world. It is energy-saving, with a payback period of two years."

Voltas has bagged a Rs 550-crore market-share of the Rs 2,000-crore air-conditioners market in India, said S N Tripathi, executive director and COO of the Unitary Products Business Group, who was also present at the news conference. "The company expects a 15-to-18 per cent growth in the Indian market. The new range will facilitate Voltas’ foray into the residential segment through retail channels."

Voltas, which is part of the Rs 41,000-crore Tata group, has plans to upgrade its existing manufacturing facility at Dadra at a cost of Rs 40 crore. Soni said this facility will be subsequently enhanced to manufacture the Vertis range.

Voltas general manager (communications) B N Garudachar said the company expects a  10-to-12 per cent market-share growth in Kerala.
