In the UK, Virgin Media is offering customers nearly twenty times the UK's average broadband speed of 5.2 Mb, pre-registration for which has opened today.

Welcoming the news, which comes even as the BBC has been forced by the government to commit £300 million from the licence fee to fund the roll out of super-fast broadband across rural parts of the country, prime minister, David Cameron said the government wanted to see the super-fast broadband brought to the peoples' homes and businesses right across the country. He added that the exciting news took the country closer towards reaching that goal.

The service will cost £35 per month when bought as part of a bundle and £45 per month when bought as a solo product.

According to Virgin nearly 13 million homes will have the potential to access the new 100Mb service as coverage was extended nationally during 2011.

Yorkshire, London and the south-east would be first to be covered under the service with roll out completion expected by mid 2012.

According to Neil Berkett, chief executive officer at Virgin Media, the world of possibilities that broadband will enable is set to explode and the company was excited about the innovations it could bring to consumers in the next decade.
