Virgin Mobile has launched the Virgin Mobile WiFi modem which is powered by a rechargeable lithium battery. It allows three different devices to connect to it over 802.11 b/g. The modem weighs only 90 grams and operates on Optus 900 mhz and 2100 mhz bands.

The modem also features a MicroSD slot to offer up to 32 GB of storage.

According to technology analysts 3G wireless has developed phenomenally in the last 18 months with speeds going up and prices going down for the most part.

Patchy signals happen often on networks as these are not perfect but the latest innovation from Virgin is a welcome introduction in that it is an innovative share-your WiFi gadget for the 3G scene that allows access for more than one person as they travel. The device also marks an Australian first in the field.

With the battery-powered Virgin modem, up to three persons can share a web connection, while one of them pays the bill.

The device works in much the same way as the current 3G internet dongle except the new Virgin product will enable expansion of the connection and creation of one's own WiFi network on the fly.

The device smaller than a typical computer mouse has a 15m range and with its light weight is expected to be especially useful to travelers and business or casual users.

The Virgin Group is an established conglomerate of companies with established businesses throughout the world including North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa.
