Chennai: The city based computer peripheral manufacturer TVS Electronics Limited has launched a bilingual keyboard under the brand name TVS Champ. The new product is targeted at the home segment and is available in eight different languages along with English. The languages include Bengali, Gujarati, Malayalam, Punjabi, Hindi, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu. Custom made layouts would be available for all the 8 languages.

TVS-E is the only company in India that does laser etching of the alphabets on its keyboard. This ensures that the characters on the key caps stay throughout the life of the keyboard.

According to S. Narendran, general manager, Marketing, "With the increase in IT penetration in B and C class cities, language applications will become the order of the day. Our mechanical keyboard, TVS Gold, already offers bilingual solutions to DTP and government segments. With increase in demand of language applications in homes and the smaller cities, membrane keyboards were the next logical step. It is a strategic move to ensure that we leverage the language opportunity growing in the country with our basket of language solutions."

The keyboard market in India is close to 36,00,000 units as per IDC 2004 estimates out of which, membrane keyboards has a share of approximately 90 per cent. TVS Electronics enjoys the market leadership in the mechanical segment with over 50 per cent market share. With the TVS Champ bilingual membrane keyboard, TVS-E expects to strengthen their market share in the membrane segment as well.
