Toshiba unveils 8MP CMOS sensor

In a recent development Toshiba has come out with the smallest 8MP CMOS sensor, which promises to offer smaller pixels, at the same time retaining image quality, which usually suffers when manufacturers try to cram pixels on a small panel.
The company committed to fixing the issue has developed the world's densest camera sensor, in which each pixel is separated by its neighboring pixels by only 1.12 micrometers. The company has thus been able to integrate 8.08 million pixels on a 1/3 inch-surface.
The sensor also comes with the back-side illumination technology (BSI) which means the lenses are placed behind the sensor and not in front of it as in the case of older generation sensors.
The technology, even as it improves light sensitivity and light absorption, prevents the small size of the sensor from affecting image quality in a negative manner.
The sensor supports 720p HD video content at 30 frames per second and 1080p HD video content at the rate of 60 frames per second.
The new sensor which is set to go into production in 2012 is currently under testing.
