Tata Power's Khandke wind farm in Maharashtra has been registered as a clean development mechanism (CDM) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Tata Power, India's largest integrated private power utility, commissioned the 50.4 MW wind farm in December 2007 and the plant has been operating well since then.

This is Tata Power's first CDM registered project. The Khandke project is expected to earn 85,000 Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) annually from UNFCCC.

In a release issued today, Tata Power said it is part of the company's sustainability initiative and that is committed to reducing its carbon footprint.

"One of the ways towards that goal is the addition of "clean and renewable energy" generation capacity, it said.

Tata Power currently has 200 MW of operating wind power generation capacity, making it one of the largest wind power generators in India. The company proposes to add 150-200 MW of wind power capacity every year.

CDM is an instrument established under the Kyoto Protocol to achieve both sustainable development and contribute to the cost effective mitigation of climate change.

The CDM will allow countries with emission reduction commitment to meet part of their reduction abroad, where green house gas (GHG) abatement costs can be lower. The CDM will also enable developing countries to attract investments in clean energy technology and assist them on a sustainable development path.
