Tata Motors shines as car sales swing back in August

India’s passenger car market revved up in August with two-digit year-on-year growth across domestic and foreign brands. Cumulative domestic car sales in August 2020 saw a volume growth of around 20 per cent, showing a steady come-back ahead of the coming festival season.
Automakers reported combined sales of 2,34,343 cars in August, posting a 20 per cent YoY increase compared with 1,95,800 units sold in the same period last year.
Tata Motors is perhaps the biggest gainer in the market upswing with a 24 per cent growth in year-on-year sales in August 2020 and a 154 per cent spike in sequential monthly volume at 18,583 units against 7,316 units sold in the previous month.
Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest carmaker, continued at the top with total sales of 1,24,624 units, including 1,15,325 units sold in the domestic market, posting YoY sales growth of 15.3 per cent. On a sequential basis, Maruti Suzuki’s domestic sales were up 17.1 per cent from the 97,768 units sold in July this year.
Hyundai reported domestic sales of 45,809 units in August 2020 as against 38,205 units sold during the same period in 2019 posting YoY growth of 19.9 per cent. It also exported 6,800 units, taking the total to just over 56,000 units.
Mahindra sold 13,651 units in August 2020 against 13,147 units with YoY increase of 4 per cent and MoM growth of 25 per cent.
Kia Motors India reported combined sales (Seltos and Carnival) of 10,853 units against 6,236 units sold in August 2019, posting a sales growth of 74 per cent.
Renault reported a 41 per cent year-on-year increase in sales at 8,060 units last month against 5,704 units sold in August 2019. Renault also saw a 26 per cent sequential month-on-month increase in sales against 5,383 units sold in the previous month.
Honda posted sales volume of 7,509 units in August 2020 against 5,383 units sold in the previous month to record 39 per cent increase.
Toyota, however, registered a 48 per cent YoY decline in sales with 5,555 units sold in August 2020 against 10,701 units sold in August 2019.
Ford also reported a 14 per cent decline in sales with 4,731 units sold in August 2020 against 5,517 units sold in August 2019.
MG, on the other hand, recorded a 41 per cent growth with 2,851 unit sales in August 2020.
