Tata Motors; compact SUV `Nexon’ has been certified with a 4-star rating by Global NCAP – a certification that is considered as the global benchmark for evaluating the car safety of newly introduced models.

The Made-in-India SUV has performed pretty well in the crash tests and has received a decent 4-star rating for adult occupant protection and a 3-star rating for child occupant protection. The body shell of the Nexon has been rated as ‘stable’.
These ratings were awarded based on the sub-4-meter SUV’s performance in a frontal offset test conducted at a speed of 64 kmph. The test was conducted at Global NCAP’s ADAC test lab in Munich, Germany.
The Tata Nexon SUV comes equipped with a handful of standard safety features, including dual front airbags, seatbelts with pre-tensioners, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and ABS. The crash test conducted by Global NCAP shows the SUV sustains maximum damage to its front-end and the engine compartment. There’s no dangerous intrusion into the cabin and the A-pillar doesn’t lose its structural integrity.
The recently concluded safety tests by Global NCAP indicate that the Nexon achieved the highest adult safety score (13.56/17.00) amongst all the models tested across the Indian market. With this ‘LEVEL NEX’ performance, the Nexon now is not only the most awarded compact SUV, but also sets a new benchmark for safety in India.
Additionally, the car has also received high rating for “Child Protection” as per the safety test conducted by Global NCAP.
Speaking about the new feat achieved by the Nexon, Mayank Pareek, president – PVBU, Tata Motors, said, “The Global NCAP results are a reflection of our commitment towards bringing technologically advanced features which are safe yet stylish. With these test results, the Nexon is India’s safest compact SUV, after being one of the most awarded models from the Tata Motors’ PV stable. It is a proud moment for all our Nexon customers today. I am delighted and proud of the hard-work put in by the entire team and congratulate each one for this accomplishment. Our journey to offer best quality products continues.”
The Energy-absorbing body structure with high-strength steel construction and critical reinforcements, effectively absorb the impact energy and provide a stable load-path for protecting the passenger compartment from deformation.
For driver and passenger safety, the Nexon comes equipped with dual-frontal airbags and seatbelts with pre-tensioner, load-limiter and crash-locking tongue which prevents the uncontrolled forward movement of the occupant and avoids injuries. The driver footwell area is also reinforced with pedal blockers to prevent the feet injuries in the event of an unfortunate crash.
In addition to the structural integrity, Nexon hosts a range of Safety features such as ABS with EBD as standard offering, ISOFIX anchorage for child-seat, child-safety door locks, voice-based alerts and front fog lamps with cornering assistance which ensure an all-round safety while driving on-road.
Speaking on the performance of the Nexon Compact SUV in the Global NCAP crash tests, David Ward, secretary general of Global NCAP, said, “The 4 stars awarded to the Tata Nexon represent a very strong result from a major Indian car manufacturer. This impressive safety performance is comfortably above the new crash test standards applied in India to new models since October 2017. It is very encouraging to see Tata aiming high for safety and a great example for others to follow. The race is clearly on for India’s first 5 star car! ”
Rohit Baluja, president of the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) said, “I wish to congratulate Tata on this very good result. It shows that ‘Made in India’ and high levels of safety go together well. With excellent efforts like this from Tata and the new crash test standards now applied by the Indian Government, we are going to see a steady improvement in the safety of new cars across the country and this will help to make our roads safer. ”
