Commercial production of Nano to start in October

Tata NanoMumbai: Trial production of Tata Motors' Rs1-lakh car, Nano, will start at its Singur (West Bengal) plant in June or July, and commercial production two months hence, Ravi Kanth, managing director of the company, said.

"We are happy with the progress.... Trial production of the small car would start in June or July," Kant told reporters after a review of the progress of the construction of the factory. "We do hope the way things are going, work would be completed within time, barring some unforeseen circumstances like rain.'' (Video: Up-close with the Tata Nano)

Commercial production of the small car, unveiled at the Ninth Auto Expo in Delhi last month, would begin within two months of trial production, he said.

Various facilities like press shop, welding shop, assembly line, engine and paint shop are being put up inside the plant premises. (View: Tata Nano picture gallery)

Shapoorji Pallonji is undertaking civil construction while Tata Motors and the West Bengal government are co-ordinating the work.

The factory sheds are partially complete, while common infrastructure like roads and other facilities are yet to be finished. (View: Video of the unveiling of the Tata Nano)

Tata Motors plans to produce 2.5 lakh units of Nano at Singur. A number of auto component manufacturers are also setting up ancillary units near the plant area.
