Chennai: Sify Communications Limited, a subsidiary of consumer internet and enterprise services company Sify Limited, has received licenses to operate and offer national long distance (NLD) and international long distance (ILD) services from the Department of Telecommunication. As a result Sify has transferred its virtual private network (VPN) business to Sify Communications, after the two companies signed a MoU to this effect earlier this year. The licenses were a precondition for being authorized to provide IP VPN services in which Sify is the market leader.

With the grant of the NLD and ILD licences, Sify Communications can now offer domestic leased circuits and international private leased circuits in addition to long distance telephony services. Already many of the company's VPN customers subscribe to these two services. According to Sify's chief technology officer Bhaskar Sayyaparaju, the NLD and ILD approvals will enable the company to provide additional services over its meshed network infrastructure.
