Samsung India Electronics has launched Corby Speed, its first touch screen mobile handset on the CDMA platform that offers data speed of up to 2.4Mbps. The handset comes with full service (voice and data) support across all CDMA operators' OMH SIM cards like Tata Indicom, Reliance Mobile, MTS and Virgin Mobile.

The consumer durables company is hoping to sell around 2 million mobile phone sets in India that would be compatible with the code division multiple access (CDMA) platform, through its open market channel next year.

The Corby Speed is available in bold colours with pop-style contours and curved body design. The phone features a 2 MP camera, along with a 2.8" display, a music player, FM with recording and an 80 MB internal memory expandable up to 8GB with a MicroSD.

The South Korean company's Indian subsidiary uses two channels to sell its CDMA offerings - directly in the open market and through mobile phone service providers.

While launching the CDMA mobile phones range in Chennai on Tuesday, company vice president Hendrick Lee said the current ratio of open market sales to telecom operator sales was 20:80, which the company expected to change to 30:70 next year.

Service providers currently use two mobile telephone technologies - CDMA and global positioning system - for mobile communication.
