Power starts flowing from Reliance Power's third Sasan UMPP unit

The third 660 MW unit of Reliance Power's 3,960 MW Sasan Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) in Madhya Pradesh today commenced power generation thus making 1,980 MW of capacity operational at the project. The three remaining units are in advanced stages of construction and will be commissioned over the next few months.

The Sasan Ultra Mega Power Project is the largest integrated power plant and coal mining project in the world. Coal production has already commenced from the 20 million tonnes Moher and Moher-Amlohri coal mines associated with the power project, Reliance Power said in a release.

With this unit, Reliance Power's generation capacity has increased by 20 per cent to 3,865 MW, which includes 3,780 MW of thermal capacity and 85 MW of renewable energy based capacity, it added.

Implementation of balance units are on track and Reliance Power said it is on track for achieving capacity of nearly 6,000 MW by mid-2014.

Reliance Power Limited, a part of Anil Ambani's ADAG Group, is India's leading private sector power generation company. The company has the largest portfolio of power projects in the private sector based on coal, gas, hydro and renewable energy, with an operating portfolio of 3,865 megawatts.

The company also has the largest captive coal reserves in the private sector, estimated at two billion tonnes. Besides, the company is developing three coal mines in Indonesia and is also developing coal bed methane-based generation capacity.

RPower stock gained after the announcement during trading hours Monday. Its share was trading at Rs65.60, up 1.55 per cent over its previous close at around 2 pm on the BSE.

The scrip has touched an intra-day high of Rs66 and low of Rs64.90. A total of 351,179 shares changed hands on the BSE.
