National Semiconductor India country manager Sanjeev Keskar has clarified that his company will support tier 1 and 2 dealers and computer manufacturers, such as Vinitron and PCS, who use its Cyrix M11 microprocessor, for some time.
National Semiconductor Corp. of the US has decided to sell off its Cyrix chip operations in the US. The company, which tried to take on Intel with the cheaper Cyrix chip, had to take the exit decision because of poor capacity utilisation at its plant and heavy losses. NatSemi had acquired the Cyrix operations for $ 550 million in 1997.
The Indian subsidiary of National Semiconductor is reported to have sold over 1 lakh Cyrix chips in the country. Of these, half were M11 chips, and the rest Media GX.
The unit will continue to push the Medis GX chips and will launch NatSemi's information appliance chips soon. The Media GX chips are being used by companies like computer maker HCL and terminal producer VXL Instruments. Information appliances will be primarily stripped-down computers that can be used for Internet access
