NHPC Limited has drawn up ambitious plans both in India and outside, according to CNBC-TV18. With two hydroelectric power projects in Myanmar under consideration involving an outlay of $5.6 billion the company is seeking to expand into the overseas market.

In an interview to CNBC-TV18, S K Garg, chairman and managing director, NHPC, said the company would commission 12 projects in the 11th plan.

"Two projects of 1,030 MW have already been delivered this year. Six projects of 800 MW will be delivered in 2010-11. Projects worth 1,600 MW will be delivered in 2011-12 and 2,050 MW will be delivered in 2012- 2013. By the end of 2013, installed capacity will be 9500 MW."

NHPC is targeting a production of 18 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in FY11. The power producer generated 17 billion kilowatt hours in FY10, lower than the targeted 17.2 billion kilowatt hours.

The state run company raised Rs4,000 crore though an IPO offering in 2009 and has an installed generation capacity 5,175 MW contributing 3 per cent of India's total generation capacity from all fuel sources.

NHPC has been looking to neighboring countries for expansion partly due to slow progress of projects in India. It also has plans for setting up power projects in Bhutan.
