Maruti sales for March up 16 per cent at 63,196 units

Maruti Udyog has reported total sales of 63,196 units for the month of March 2006, including exports of 2,055 units, as compared to 54,613 units during the same month of pervious year - an increase of 15.7 per cent.

As compared to February 2006, sales have increased by 53.78 per cent from 41,095 units.

The cut in excise duties for small passenger cars and the subsequent reduction in prices have helped push up volumes during the month. Small cars are the best performing segment for the company during the month.

Sales of premium hatchback models like Alto, Wagon R, Zen and Swift increased by 24 per cent to 37,279 units for the month as compared to 30,039 during March 2005. The company had sold 23,897 units in this segment during February 2006.

Maruti managed to arrest the declining trend in sales of entry level model Maruti - 800. The model sold 10,937 units during the month as compared to 10,252 units for March 2005 and 6,074 units for February 2006.

In the passenger van segment, the company's models Omni and Versa saw a growth of 40.9 per cent to 8,390 units as compared to 5,955 units for March 2005.

Mid-sized sedan sales increased by 5.8 per cent to 3,735 units as compared to 3,529 units for March 2005.

Total domestic sales for the month increased by 20.6 per cent to 61,141 units from 50,693 units a year ago. Exports declined by 48 per cent to 2,055 units as compared to 3,920 units during the same month of previous year.

For the full year 2005-06, sales have increased 4.8 per cent to 561,822 units as compared to 536,301 units for the previous financial year. Domestic sales crossed the 5 lakh unit per annum mark for the first time in the company's history.

Sales of premium hatchbacks increased by 23.5 per cent for the year, helping Maruti to overcome the 23.3 per cent drop in sales of Maruti-800. Mid-sized sedan sales increased 7.8 per cent during the year.

Exports saw a drop of 29 per cent for the full year to 34,784 units from 48,899 units during the previous year.

Maruti is trading at Rs898 (up 2.72 per cent) at 1.43 PM on the NSE today.
