Mumbai: Chinese technology major Lenovo, which last year acquired the personal computer business of IBM, opened its first 'innovation center'  in India on Thursday. The 4,500sq ft facility is located in Mumbai''s north-western suburb of Andheri.

The new facility - the company's third ''innovation center,'' the other two being in Research Triangle Park in the US, and Beijing in China - will enable large enterprise and mid-market customers, business partners, solution providers and independent software vendors to collaborate on new personal computing solutions to address today''s toughest client IT challenges.

Intel, Microsoft, LANDesk, IBM and Cisco will partner with Lenovo at the India Innovation Center to showcase new enterprise level PC solutions in areas such as hardware platform and application integration, active management technology, network connectivity and power management.

The facility will deploy globally developed solutions to specific customer requirements in India, besides developing solutions.

"With our third Innovation Center in India, we aim to accelerate innovation for diverse client challenges and developing markets," said Deepak Advani, senior vice-president and chief marketing officer, Lenovo. "By collaborating with our partners, we will focus on solving customer IT problems with an emphasis on the end user. The center will serve as a collaboration venue for fully integrated solutions along with our alliance partners."

According to Neeraj Sharma, managing director, Lenovo South Asia, the decision to base the third Innovation Center in India "is testimony to the importance Lenovo ascribes to India as one of our fastest growing markets and recognition of the unique, large enterprise and mid-market customers here."

Professionals from Lenovo, Intel, Microsoft, LANDesk,IBM and Cisco besides other technology companies, independent software vendors and business partners will operate out of the Andheri facility.

Lenovo, which is a leader in the global PC market, has a turnover of $13 billion. The company was established by a dozen Chinese engineers in Beijing in 1984. In May 2005, it acquired the personal computing division of US giant IBM. Lenovo is one of the fastest-growing PC brands in India today.
