Mumbai: Engineering and construction major Larsen and Toubro Ltd will distribute a range of heavy-duty Scania trucks in India under an agreement with the Swedish heavy vehicle maker.

Scania is the world's largest manufacturer of multi-axle trucks. Hino, Volvo and Scania together have about 82 per cent market share in this segment.

L&T said the 300-500 hp multi-axle trucks would cater to the needs of the construction and mining sectors and would complement the company's range of hydraulic excavators.

L&T manufactures a broad range of hydraulic excavators, loader backhoes, and aggregate crushing systems, stacker-reclaimers and surface miners.

Scania, with a current turnover of $8.8 billion, is a leader in the production of above 16-tonne capacity trucks, heavy-duty buses and engines for mining, power generation and marine applications. Currently, about one million Scania vehicles are in operation in 100 countries in Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa and Australia.

Scania is targeting the construction segments in the country, where there is an increasing demand for robust western European heavy trucks with a high technical content. Scania vehicles and engines have demonstrated outstanding economy, performance, driveability and reliability.

This relationship is expected to further boost L&T's strong presence in the mining and construction sectors, the company said in a filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange.
