India is among 10 countries that made the most directions for removal of content to Google, relating to criticism of the government. This was revealed in a recently published Transparency Report on the governments that directed it to remove contents.

According to the report, between January and June 2011, the centre and various state police and government agencies had given more than 350 directions to Google for removal of certain content mainly from Orkut and YouTube, which included criticism against government.

However, only one court direction resulted from among the directions by governments and various agencies from India.

Other major countries that sent large number of such directions were Brazil, China, Germany, France, Libya, Norway, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey and US.

In addition to removal directions, governments and agencies from India made 1739 requests to Google for disclosure of User Data and 2439 User Accounts details.

According to its report, Google said it complied with 70 per cent of such requests during the period January-June 2011.
