Google chairman Eric Schmidt says it would be weeks, perhaps even months, before the first devices to run Android Ice Cream Sandwich hit the market.

Expected to launch as Android 4.0, the next build of the platform would combine features from both the Gingerbread and Honeycomb builds and though the official announcement has yet to be made, according to rumours, the next release beyond Ice Cream Sandwich would be Jelly Bean.

According to industry experts, Google has been referring to the build as Jelly Bean, but that is not yet official and it may be recalled that Android 2.2 carried the name of  ''Flan'' before it was announced as Froyo.

They say there would be some ''game-changing stuff'' in the Jelly Bean release which would include features that failed to make the cut for Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Android software releases happen in alphabetical order, with the earlier two versions having been codenamed Gingerbread and Honeycomb.

Ice Cream Sandwich could possibly make its debut on the firm's upcoming Nexus Prime smartphone and though it is not clear what the version number would be, but 2.4 or 4.0 are the most likely.

Analysts say Ice Cream Sandwich would bring new stuff to the Android operating system such as an updated look and features that appear in Android 3.0 Honeycomb. This next version is supposed integrate Gingerbread for smartphones and Honeycomb for tablets to create an OS that would work on both devices.

According to Google, Ice Cream Sandwich would deliver one operating system that worked everywhere, regardless of device.
