Google eyeing 3G action in India: report

Internet search giant Google is learnt to be keen on a piece of the radio bandwidth for third-generation (3G) telephony, which the government of India is set to auction in January.
The government is set for the auction radio bandwidth for the launch of third-generation (3G) telephony services, including WiMax.
Google, the largest search engine company in the world is eyeing opportunities in the third generation mobile telephony, or 3G in India, the 'Business Standard' reported today.
The auction of 3G spectrum is scheduled to start from 14 January 2010 and, in addition to domestic players, the government has allowed interested foreign firms to participate in the auction. However foreign firms will be eligible only in joint ventures with local firms and are allowed a stake of 74 per cent in such ventures at the maximum.
The report says the US firm would likely enter as a technology partner rather than a service provider. However, according to the paper, a Google spokesperson declined comment over the speculation.
