A new grinding unit of Ambuja Cements Ltd (ACL) has been commissioned in the industrial town of Nalagarh in Himachal Pradesh.

Chairman emeritus of Ambuja Cements Suresh Neotia said the plant with a manufacturing capacity of 1.5 million units per annum involved an investment of Rs300 crore. Work on construction of the plant started in January last year.

The plant, which is Ambuja's third cement unit in the hill state was inaugurated by chief minister P K Dhumal. The unit is also the company's 12th unit in the country and is located near Nalagarh in the Himalayan foothills close to the Punjab border.

The unit will use the clinker from ACL's Rauri unit around 95km from the plant and operate a fully automated production process deploying German technology.

The new unit would allow easy access to all important markets of the state including the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana. The cement, will be supplied in specially designed 50kg tamper-proof and seepage-proof bags.

Meanwhile, the tenure of a special package for industrial development in the state expiring this month is likely to be extended according to experts but they remain skeptical of its impact as the scheme has largely failed to attract significant investment in the past seven years.
