General Motors (GM), the largest automaker in the US yesterday said that it is recalling 154,112 Chevrolet Cruze compact cars to make sure their steering shafts were installed properly.

The Detroit-based automaker said it wants to check if the intermediate steering shaft covers in Cruze models were properly installed. GM will also check 120,295 of the recalled vehicles with automatic transmission for proper installation of the transmission shift linkage.

The cars were built in Lordstown, Ohio, and sold in the US and Canada. GM said that there were no crashes or injuries associated with the recall.

"We think very few vehicles in the population have either issue, but we chose to conduct these inspections to give customers additional peace of mind about the quality of the Cruze," said Terry Woychowski, GM vice president of Global Quality. "I conducted a quality inspection of the Lordstown plant this week, and I am confident we have made the necessary process changes so neither of these conditions happens again."

The Cruze was GM's top-selling car last month having sold over 25,000, and more than 75,000 since launch. Only its Chevrolet Silverado sold more units last month than the Cruze.

The latest recall comes after GM recalled 2,100 Cruze cars to inspect for an improperly fastened steering wheel.

GM also said that it will also recall 8,723 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans for the model year 2011 for a possible brake-fluid leak and 6,303 GMC Canyon pickup trucks since the company feels that a windshield-wiper motor-crank arm may not be tightened to specification.
