State-run Electronics Corporation of India Ltd (ECIL) has entered into a licensing agreement with IIT Bombay to manufacture high-speed transport routers developed by the Gigabit Networking Laboratory of IIT Bombay.

Based on an innovative technology developed by IIT professor Ashwin Gumaste and his team, the first locally manufactured router is said to be cheaper and more efficient.

"These routers promise to set new price and performance benchmarks in an industry dominated primarily by imported products," an ECIL release said.

"With built-in security features and a fully Indian design, the indigenous router will help avoid the vulnerabilities posed by "black box" products, populating the information highways which carry vital and strategic data," the release said.

"With the national data infrastructure set to grow many fold with gigabit pipes slated to enter villages, this development fills a vital gap in the indigenous technology fabric,' the ECIL release said.

Prof Khakkar, director, IIT Bombay and Y S Mayya, chairman and managing director of ECIL signed the agreement in Mumbai, on Wednesday.
