US-based enterprise software maker Citrix Systems Inc today agreed to buy privately held mobile data traffic manger Bytemobile for an undisclosed amount.

Santa Clara, California-based Bytemobile provides Smart Capacity solutions to operators of mobile networks delivering video, web and multimedia services to their subscribers, which enable them to improve the utilisation and performance of their existing network capacity as subscriber data traffic continues to grow.

Many operators worldwide have experienced increasing pressure on capacity as a result of traffic congestion caused by faster networks, more sophisticated devices, richer content, and consumer demand for bandwidth-intensive applications such as high-definition video, streaming media, and video chat.

Bytemobile's products are designed to deliver Smart Capacity to mobile networks without the traditional requirement for new wireless spectrum or new infrastructure.

Investors in Bytemobile include Trident Capital, Benchmark Capital, NovaFund Advisors and S1 Capital Partners.

Buying Bytemobile gives Citrix Systems a foothold in the core infrastructure of more than 130 mobile operators in 60 countries.
