State-run telecom service provider Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has announced unlimited free calling from its landline to mobiles and landlines on any network, on all Sundays as an Independence Day gift to customers.

The scheme can be availed of for whole day on Sundays after 15 August 2016 on a pan India basis.

This is in addition to the night hour scheme where customers can make free calls to any operator between 9pm to 7am every day.

"The competent authority on recommendation of tariff committee - CFA (Consumer Fixed Access) has approved unlimited free calling from BSNL landline to any network's mobile and landline on all Sundays on pan India basis with effect from August 15, 2016," BSNL stated in a press release issued in Delhi.

BSNL is already providing unlimited free calling (local and STD) facility during night (9pm to 7am) from its landline phones to all landline phones and mobile phones of all service provider's network on all India basis.

"With this circular, BSNL also launched promotional offer for new landline customers for a period of 90 days with effect from 15 August. The customers who get a new landline in the 90 day period starting from 15 August will only have to pay a fixed monthly charge of Rs49 and the installation charges will be free. The additional facility of free night calling (local and STD) will also be available for them," said KS Rana, AGM (sales), Meerut.

Otherwise, a new landline installation charge is Rs500. Under the scheme, all major landline general plans of rural and urban areas, landline special plans as well as all major combo (landline with broadband) plans are covered.

"The business of landlines is on a low because people these days prefer cellphones over landlines. This initiative is meant to attract more customers towards BSNL," Rana noted.
