ABB to strengthen northern grid through Uttarakhand project

Power Transmission Corporation of Uttarakhand Ltd (PTCUL) has aked ABB to set up three substations to strengthen the northern Indian region's transmission grid through hydropower.

Through this Rs165-crore order ABB will design, supply, install and commission the substations, rated at 132 kV (kilovolts), 220 kV and 400 kV respectively, as well as transformers and other major power equipment.

''These substations will enhance the capacity and reliability of the northern grid and improve power quality by strengthening the transmission and distribution network of the region,'' said Biplab Majumder, vice chairman and managing director, ABB India.

''A stronger grid will play a crucial role in the economic development of the region by catering to the power requirements of the fast-growing industrial belts,'' he added.

The substations are scheduled for completion in 2011, and will help meet growing demand for electricity with renewable power sources, supporting sustainable economic development in the region. The Srinagar substation in the western Himalayas will be one of the largest of its kind in the area.

''We are pleased help strengthen India's grid infrastructure and support the development of renewable power resources,'' said Peter Leupp, head of ABB's Power Systems division. ''ABB's technologies will help to ensure safe, reliable and efficient transmission of power in the region.''
