Apple Inc is working on making subscription content available through its News app, which will give publishers with paywalls a new way to control who saw their articles, Reuters reported citing two sources familiar with the matter.

With the move, Apple News would differentiate itself from Facebook's Instant Articles news offering, which did not offer subscriber-only content. Apple would  get a boost from the move, as it sought to distinguish itself from the rest of the online news apps crowd.

According to commentators, the move comes even as news publishers try to figure out how they could work with Apple and Facebook Inc, which had emerged as important distributors of news content to their hundreds of millions of users, but at the same time are getting between publishers and their readers.
