Apple Inc said it sold over 10 million iPhones in the weekend of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus being launched for sale on Friday, pointing to strong demand for phones with larger displays, Reuters reported.

According to chief executive Tim Cook, the company could have sold even more of the two models had more supplies been available.

According to analysts' estimates, first-weekend sales of up to 10 million iPhones, after the company booked a record pre-orders of 4 million on 12 September, the day pre-orders opened.

Shares of the company did not change much at $100.98 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq yesterday. The first-quarter revenue of the company is likely to be 9 per cent higher than Wall Street estimates, based on the reported sales and projected demand for the new iPhones, Piper Jaffray & Co analyst Gene Munster wrote in a note. According to Munster his expected earnings per share would be 12 per cent higher than estimates.

"Despite the supply chain constraints around the iPhone 6 Plus and tightness around certain models of the iPhone 6, we believe (Monday's) strong print demonstrates that Apple executed extremely well in the face of severe supply constraints," Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Brian White wrote in a note.

Meanwhile, the bad news was that despite all its advanced features, and its steep starting price of $199 and going up to $399 for the iPhone 6 Plus, the device still cracked if it falls on its screen, Mailonline reported.

In a recent demonstration every iPhone ever made was tested to check how it would fare if dropped on the side and their screen. Only one phone managed to survive the impact with its screen intact.

The iPhone 3GS emerged the winner, with the screen taking the impact without any distress after the phone was dropped.

The iPhone 3GS, was introduced over five years ago on 8 June, 2009. Apple stopped producing the iPhone 3GS in September 2012.
