Apple Inc's new iPhone, which will be on offer from tomorrow will come with a bigger screen and 4G wireless technology as the company looks to preserve its edge over rivals like Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Google Inc.

The iPhone 5 largely measured up to the expectations of gadget geeks and technology analysts ahead of its unveiling today but made little difference to Apple shares -- already near record highs.

The latest iPhone comes as Apple is facing competition from not only traditional rivals  Samsung and Google but also recent entrants like Microsoft Corp now pushing its Windows Phone 8 operating system hard as an alternative to Apple and Android, the dominant operating systems in the world.

Analysts have projected sales of 10 million - 12 million of the latest devices in this month alone.

The iPhone 5 features a 4-inch "retina" display, allows surfing on a high-speed 4G LTE wireless network, and is 20 per cent lighter than the previous iPhone 4S.

The iPhone ships 21 September in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Britain and would hit 100 countries by year's end in the fastest international rollout for an iPhone so far.
