Chip maker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) launched its new ''Phenom'' processors on Monday 19 November.

The new Phenom is a ''quad-core'' processor; a single chip with four distinct processors that work simultaneously. The Phenom processor was unveiled as part of a new gaming platform called Spider.

But financial analysts gave the new offering the thumbs down, saying that the two released models worked at speeds well below Intel''s quad-core offerings, which top out at 3 gigahertz. They pointed to a review by tech website AnandTech, which concluded that AMD''s 65-nanometer Phenom was inferior to Intel''s similar-sized chip.
