Railways’ freight earning up 10.25% in April-December 2013

Freight revenue of the Railways has increased by 10.25 per cent to Rs67,705.11 crore during the first nine months of the current financial year (April-December 2013-14) compared to Rs61,408.05 crore during the corresponding period last year.

Commodity-wise freight traffic of the Railways during the April-December 2013-14 period recorded an increase of 8.42 per cent.

During the period, the Railways carried 769.74 million tonnes of commodity freight against 735.22 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 4.70 per cent.

Out of the total earnings of Rs8,635.38 crore from commodity-wise freight traffic during December 2013, Rs3,694.27 crore came from transportation of 44.37 million tonnes of coal followed by followed by Rs914.52 crore from 10.91 million tonnes of iron ore for exports and for domestic users like steel plants, Rs754.63 crore from 9.29 million tonnes of cement, Rs653.89 crore from 4.32 million tonnes of foodgrains,

This was followed by Rs506.02 crore from 3.65 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs524.90 crore from 3.42 million tonnes of pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points, Rs472.73 crore from 4.22 million tonnes of fertilizers, Rs149.62 crore from 1.51 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants except iron ore, Rs378.48 crore from 3.99 million tonnes of container freight and Rs586.32 crore from 6.48 million tonnes of other goods.
